London to attract 250,000 for New Year fireworks
The London Eye will take centre stage as the city counts down to 2012, with Big Ben's chimes setting off 12,000 colourful fireworks.Mr Johnson said: 'A glittering display will light up the sky to herald the start of 2012, the most extraordinary and exciting year we are likely to see in our lifetime in this city.
'We will stage an incredible Olympic and Paralympic Games, which will put us in the global spotlight and spur the long-term rejuvenation of east London and bring benefits to the whole capital.'
The show, which is set to be watched on television by millions around the world, will last for 11minutes and 15 seconds, while accompanied by London-themed songs.
But there is a threat that visibility may be poor due to fog and drizzle. Temperatures are expected to be mild on the night at 15C (59F).
Police will also be in attendance, with 3,000 officers assigned to patrol the Thames Southbank area.
Officers will be posted on podiums to get a clearer view of potential troublemakers.
Chief Superintendent Julia Pendry, of Scotland Yard, said: 'New Year's Eve is a special time of the year and we want people to enjoy it to the full. Make sure you look after yourself and those around you.
'Officers will be out and about to deter criminals and keep crowds safe. New Year's Eve in central London is extremely busy so do come prepared and wrap up warm, as you may have to wait to prevent overcrowding.'
The viewing area will be closed off once it reaches full capacity, to help ensure the safety of revellers.
Roads will be closed across London's central zones from 4pm.
Free travel in the city will be available between 11.45pm through to 4.30am on New Year's Day.
